Hello Mustangs! In the library, students are continuing to learn about our national celebration of Hispanic Heritage. We've watched short informative videos, handled cultural artifacts, listened to and discussed a variety of picture books and applauded staff guests who shared personal traditions and stories with us! A special thank you to Michelle Villegas, Jesse Landeros, Virginia Alveraz, Amelia Ribbens, Maria Kalin and George Velazquez! Mark Your Calendar! This Friday, September 24th from 3:00-4:30pm the SBPL Library on the Go Mobile will visit MUS in the north parking lot. Overarching Theme: Habit of Mind: Listening with Empathy; Kindness Library Education & Enrichment: K-6 - National Hispanic Heritage Month continues. K-6 - Readings: 1. Pura Belpre Awarded book, Dreamers by Uri Morales - Beautifully illustrated immigration journey and metamorphosis of a mother and child and how they used the library as a safe harbor for learning and assimilation. 2. 2015-2017, U.S. Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera's book, Imagine - Takes students on his life journey as a child to becoming the U.S. Poet Laureate. His message challenges students to go after their dreams. Additionally: K - additional reading, Because of an Acorn by Lola M. Schaefer and Adam Schaefer to complement their science unit of study, "Plants and Animals." 2nd & 3rd grade - students were introduced to "book series" through a book series read around. 4th, 5th & 6th grade - students took part in a Hispanic author read around. Battle of the Books was introduced. See last post for more details. All students had time to browse and check books out. What's Next? Overarching Theme: Habit of Mind: Listening with Empathy; Kindness continues. Library Education: New library books have arrived! Students will have an opportunity to explore and sample our new collection. The following week, students may check out their favorites!
