Hello and Happy Friday!
A few weeks ago, I met with MUS parent and Montecito Public Librarian, Kim Crail to learn about current public library offerings and ways in which we may collaborate. Mark your calendars:
Our MUS Library website continues to take shape! Check it out. What Happened in the Library this Week? Sept. 7-10 Overarching Theme: Habit of Mind: Listening with Empathy; Kindness Library Education & Enrichment: K-6 - Rosh Hashanah & Yom Kippur awareness K-3 - If You Plant a Seed by Kadir Nelson - Beautifully illustrated book showing the effects of kindness 4-6 -"Book Boogie" - students explored new library books in different genres. Each student started a "Next Reads" book list to refer to based on their findings. Additionally, Battle of the Books was introduced. Battle of the Books is an annual event hosted by the Santa Barbara County Office of Education and for students in grades 4 - 6. In a quiz-show-style "battle," students throughout the county test their knowledge as a team on a specified selection of age-appropriate books. Teams compete with one another until only two teams are left to battle for the win! a Santa Barbara County Office of Education program was introduced. The event is in April, however, interested students need plenty of time to start reading books from the BOB list to be eligible. What's Next? Overarching Theme: Habit of Mind: Listening with Empathy; Kindness Library Education: Celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month - Our national month long observance of Hispanic Americans was founded by President Johnson in 1968 and expanded to one month by President Reagan in 1988 in effort to acknowledge and celebrate the rich contributions made by Hispanic Americans. Watch this short video for more information. I'm thrilled our students will learn more about this rich culture from staff members willing to share their special traditions along with a wide range of Hispanic American picture book authors.
